Padam Palace in Rampur

The entrance to Kinnaur, is the bustling bazaar town (Rampur), which was once the capital of the Bushahr. Today, Rampur is a great spiritual place, and also a stop to change the buses. You can enter the garden, which is located beside the bus stand and is open to all the visitors.

This big garden or lawn is often used for the festivals as well as for the public functions. One end of the lawn represents ‘Macchkandi’ (a masterpiece in woodwork) which was used for seating the royal family (especially the women) during the celebrations.

The Padam Palace is very important place which has the large edifice that has been built out of the wood along with stone carvings and is worth visiting. Tourists are allowed to visit the garden but not inside the palace. However, people can enjoy seeing the architecture from outside. This palace was designed by the Bir Chand Shukla for the sake of Raja Padam Singh who stayed at this Palace for long years. It took around 6 years to build this huge Padam Palace in Himachal Pradesh. That means, the building was started in the year 1919 and ended in the year 1925.

Architecture of Padam Palace

The Palace is found to be an amazing testament of taste, style as well as the architecture. The Palace is two-storeyed building, which is manufactured using the wood and stone. This Palace has a tilting tin roof with the spiral projections.

Stone arches prevail the lower floor, while the woodwork has become the king on the upper storey. These wooden screens that are made with floral and statuette designs receive the light without displaying them inside. These Royalty Portraits decorate the walls of the Palace hall and wooden ceiling is carved in a better way.

On the same Palace premises, tourists can see a summer house which has the Tibetan murals, as well as the Hindu Temple too. Also, the older part of the town and the nearby river, are the most important places for better refreshment. There are even small ways which are lined-up with shops; while, the Hindu temple and Buddhist temples like the Sri Sat Nahan Temple, which was constructed in the year 1926.

The Palace that is built using the Pahari architectural style attracts many people and has also become a very important market place as well as the business centers in Rampur. This place is very well-known for its excellent shopping hubs where people can find the exotic items here. You can choose to buy certain wooden handicraft items or wooden carvings; you can also buy sculptures made out of clay as well.

The very famous or distracting items sold here are the handspun woolen shawls, and rugs which gives very warmth during the coldest weather. Such kind of woolen items have made Rampur so popular. The hand-spun blankets sold here are very well-known as the 'Rampuri Chaddar' (Chaddar is the Hindi word for blanket). These blankets have become renowned for the softness as well as the durability; due to which, the tourists wish to buy at least a single item from here. While, the tradition of Rampur feels completely rejuvenated on visiting this place.
